Pakistan hockey captain asks PHF to clear dues

KARACHI: Pakistan hockey captain Muhammad Imran said on Wednesday that how long players will be financially sacrificing while representing the country at the international level.

"Many of players have sacrificed their international league contracts to play for Pakistan," he told reporters at Hockey Club of
Pakistan Stadium after opening day's trials for the Champions Trophy.

He said he quit the league contract halfway in Hong Kong to come to appear in the national trials and to lead the team in next month's Champions Trophy.

"I may be losing Rs.1.5 million for leaving three contract for the sake of the country," he added.

"We have been waiting the payment of Central Contracts for the past one year. We got families and needed money to support them," Double Olympic full-back said.

"If situation doesn't improve we may stop playing for the country and PHF and peoples will be looking for us," he commented.

Like Imran, Umar Bhutta some senior and junior also returned from overseas to appear in Champions Trophy trials.     

In the meantime cash starved (PHF) is anxiously waiting for their special grant from the government to run their affairs, PHF
Secretary  General Rana Mujahid Ali.

"We are anxiously looking to government funding to raise the funds for the upcoming Champions Trophy," he told reporters at Hockey Club of Pakistan Stadium, where he came to watch National Hockey trials for the tour of South Korea.

"Besides other affairs, we got to pay players long standing dues and award them cash incentives if hockey keep going," he said.

"PHF badly needed funding to prepare the national senior and junior teams and for domestic circuit," he said.

He said a request for a grant of Rs.500 million was submitted to Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) and other sports authorities for the
release of funds.

He said Pakistan team badly needed international exposure to make team strong and to qualify for 2016  Olympic Games held in Rio de Janeiro. - APP
